Chaturthi@Dabamol GOA

GANESH CHATURTHI @ My Village in GOA

Ganesh Chaturthi in Goa is celebrated in very different way much to surprise of many. The tradition is different from Maharashtra as well as even to any other part of the country.
The tradition is now only limited to few villages in Goa and I am lucky to be belonging to one out of such a village.

Dabamol is a very small village in south Goa in Curchorem with 29 houses and out of these 15 houses have Ganesha. We celebrate for either 2 days or 7 days. This time Ganesha was for 2 days and it was a great fun as always.

MY HOUSE

Tying Matoli
Matoli means all kinds of available fruits, vegetables, Coconut, Beatle nuts, etc. which are tied above Ganesha and symbolizes that we need to worship these things along with Ganesha.

Choosing Ganesha:
Mostly Ganesha of particular choice would be booked well in advance from hundreds of others

The Afternoon AARTI with Village People and Relatives

Instruments for AARTI
The Ghumat : Made of earthern pot and Skin of monitor lizard. The killing of this species is restricted by Goa Govt. Still People Manage to get this instrument prepared. The cost of instrument ranged this year from 1200/- t0 1800/-

The SAMEL :  Made of wooden pot with a Goats Skin. This is another rhythm instrument which is used for Aarti. The sound is huge and continuous. The samel gives the rhythm while Ghumat acts as a base on this continuous rhythm.

The Kasalye: The kasalye ( in my hand in picture) is similar to bigger TAAL. It is used in orchestra, etc

The Aarti is finally a huge noise yet very rhythmic. The entire village and even surrounding villages can hear the voice when aarti is going on. The tune of aarti is very slow and it takes around 20 minutes for aarti at each home. Daily we do aarti at 15 houses twice a day during the festival.

The afternoon aarti would start around 12 and end at 4.00 pm
The night aarti will be starting at 8.00 and go on till midnight

Visarjana Time: Taking Ganesha now outside Pooja Ghar
